Caving Oversuit Buying Guide

A decent caving oversuit protects your undersuit and keeps off the worst of the mud and water.

Some suits are tougher, lighter, more flexible or better suited to people who run hot. There is no perfect option for everyone.

This guide will help you match an oversuit to the caving you actually do.

Durability: what sort of caving are you doing?

For digging, sharp crawls and caves that regularly destroy kit, choose a tougher suit such as the Landjoff Cordura Extreme.

For most UK sport caving, an all-rounder such as the Landjoff Cordura Plus or Rodcle Cueto balances durability and comfort.

If you cave occasionally, run hot or visit warmer systems with less abrasive crawling, the K2A Lightweight Oversuit may suit you better. Buy for your normal trips, not the worst cave you might visit once.

Heat: do you run hot?

Thicker suits are usually warmer. That can help people who feel the cold, but becomes uncomfortable on long walk-ins, crawls and movement-heavy trips.

The Cordura Plus and Rodcle Cueto offer a good middle ground. If overheating is your main problem, consider the lighter K2A Lightweight Oversuit.

Flexibility: how much restriction annoys you?

Thicker, tougher suits usually feel more restrictive when crawling, climbing and doing SRT. If freedom of movement matters to you, factor it into your choice.

The Rodcle Cueto balances toughness and movement. The premium Steinberg SuperArlecchino and Steinberg SuperCaronte add stretch for greater flexibility.

All-round oversuits

For most cavers, an all-round oversuit is the safest choice.

The Landjoff Cordura Plus is tough, practical and reasonably flexible, with braces, a hidden hood, internal pocket, adjustable cuffs and reinforced wear areas. It comes in red, blue, black and yellow.

The Rodcle Cueto has a more premium feel, with reinforced wear areas, a hidden hood, internal belt, pockets and a fleece-lined collar.

Heavy-duty suits

If digging, sharp crawls or rough caves regularly damage your kit, consider the Landjoff Cordura Extreme. Its tougher fabric is intended for harder wear.

The trade-off is extra warmth and reduced flexibility. Choose one because your caving demands it, not simply because it sounds more robust.

Lightweight suits

The K2A Lightweight Oversuit suits warmer trips, occasional caving, travel, vertical systems and people who overheat easily.

It will not last as well as heavier Cordura in abrasive crawls, so it is less suitable for regular digging and rough UK caving.

PVC suits

A PVC caving oversuit provides a more waterproof, easy-to-clean outer layer for wet and muddy trips.

PVC is flexible but less breathable, so it can feel sweaty during hard movement or if you already run hot.

Braces, belts and hot walk-ins

Internal braces on the Landjoff suits let you wear the top half down on warm approaches without the suit falling around your ankles.

The Rodcle Cueto uses an internal belt, which shapes the waist while caving and also helps when the top half is removed.

Pockets

Internal pockets are better protected; external pockets are easier to reach but suffer more wear and snagging.

The Rodcle Cueto has internal and external pockets. The Cordura Plus and Extreme use a roomy internal pocket with fewer external snag points.

Oversuit pockets are not waterproof. Use a proper container for anything important.

Hoods

A hood makes a big difference in wet caves by stopping water running down your neck. Hidden hoods stay tucked into the collar when not needed.

The Cordura Plus, Cordura Extreme and Rodcle Cueto all include hidden hoods.

Reinforced areas

Knees, elbows, lower arms and seats take the most abuse. The Cordura Plus and Rodcle Cueto reinforce these high-wear areas.

The K2A Lightweight Oversuit prioritises low weight, while the Cordura Extreme relies on very tough fabric throughout.

Shrinkage and drying

We favour suits with limited shrinkage, but poor drying can still damage them.

Rinse off heavy mud and dry your suit somewhere ventilated. Avoid hot drying rooms, radiators and direct heat.

Trying on and size swaps

Try your oversuit on cleanly at home over your normal undersuit. Kneel, squat, stoop and reach to check that you can move without excessive loose fabric.

What should I buy?

• For most UK sport caving: choose an all-rounder like the Landjoff Cordura Plus or Rodcle Cueto.
• For digging or rough, sharp caves: choose the tougher Landjoff Cordura Extreme.
• For occasional caving, hot runners or warmer trips: choose the K2A Lightweight Oversuit.
• For wet, muddy trips: consider the Landjoff PVC Caving Oversuit.
• For maximum flexibility and premium comfort: look at the Steinberg SuperArlecchino or Steinberg SuperCaronte.

For most cavers, a good all-round oversuit is the answer. Go tougher for abrasive caves, lighter if heat is the problem, or stretchier if freedom of movement is your priority.
