COMRU: Charity Spotlight

We spend a lot of time deep in the Lake District’s historic mines, and while the underground world offers awe-inspiring beauty and adventure, it also demands respect. That’s why we’re proud to spotlight and support an organisation that makes our community safer: COMRU – the Cumbria Ore Mines Rescue Unit.

COMRU is a specialist volunteer rescue organisation that’s been serving Cumbria’s underground exploration community since 1974. Staffed by highly trained individuals with real-world experience in cave rescue, mining, and rope access, COMRU is on call 24/7 to respond to emergencies in the region’s extensive network of mines.

Why Their Work Matters

Whether you're an occasional explorer or a seasoned underground adventurer, knowing that a team like COMRU exists brings real peace of mind. As regular visitors to Lake District mines ourselves, we know first-hand how complex and remote some of these sites can be. COMRU’s team trains relentlessly for exactly these conditions.

Their presence means that cavers, mine explorers, and even industrial workers in the region can rely on expert help if the worst should happen. It’s not just about rescue—it's about community, safety, and shared responsibility.

Meeting the Team Behind the Mission

We recently had the pleasure of meeting up with Tracey, their incredible team leader, and some of her team. She walked us through their operations, and even gave us a close-up look at one of their legendary UNIMOG rescue vehicles—a beast of a machine equipped to handle Cumbria’s most challenging terrain.

It’s no exaggeration to say that the UNIMOG is a rescue team’s dream: rugged, reliable, and ready for anything. Knowing that COMRU can get to remote mine entrances—no matter the weather or landscape—is just another reason we’re grateful for their work. They're currently kitting it out as a mobile ops base, and raising money for their new Penrith station, so donations to organisations like this are vital.

Our Contribution

As part of our ongoing commitment to the underground community, we made a money and gear donation to COMRU to help support their operations and equipment needs. Every pound helps fuel training exercises, maintain specialist gear, and ensure the team stays rescue-ready.

Join Us in Supporting COMRU

The people at COMRU are volunteers—giving their time, skills, and courage to keep our underground community safe. If you’re a fellow explorer, local resident, or just someone who believes in supporting grassroots safety initiatives, consider donating directly via comru.org.uk.

We’re proud to stand behind COMRU—and we’re even prouder to know they stand behind us, every time we head underground in the Lakes!
