Tackle Sack Size Guide

Caving is a thrilling adventure activity that requires specialized equipment to ensure safety and comfort. One of the most important pieces of equipment for a caver is a rope bag, which is used to store and transport rope while underground. However, choosing the correct size of rope bag can be a bit tricky. In this blog post, we will guide you through the process of selecting the right size and type of rope bag for caving.

Consider the Length of rope you'll be needing to carry

The first step in choosing the correct size of rope bag is to determine the length of your rope. You want a rope bag that is large enough to accommodate your rope without being too bulky or cumbersome. A good rule of thumb is to choose a rope bag that is at least 20% larger than the length of your rope.

Our 22 litre caving tackle sacks  can carry around 50-70m of rope (depending on rope diameter).

Our 17 litre caving tackle sacks are around 25% smaller which are easier to maneuver through more awkward passage, and can carry around 40-55m of rope (depending on rope diameter).

For bigger trips, you might want to consider our larger 28 litre extra tough tackle sack or 33 litre extra tough tackle sacks. These hold 90-100 and 100-120m of rope respectively, which is about as much as any sane person might want to carry on their own.

Look for a Bag with Adjustable Straps

When selecting a rope bag for caving, it's important to look for a bag with adjustable straps. This will allow you to adjust the size of the bag to fit your specific needs. Adjustable straps will also make it easier to carry the bag on your back, which is essential for the walk-in.

Consider the Type of Caving You Will be Doing

The type of caving you will be doing is also a factor to consider when choosing the correct size of rope bag. If you will be doing vertical caving, where you will be abseiling a lot, you will need a larger rope bag to accommodate the longer rope length. On the other hand, if you will be doing more horizontal caving, where you will be crawling and climbing through tight spaces, you may want a smaller rope bag for a short handline and some snacks that is easier to maneuver in confined spaces.

Also to consider is whether you're regularly on tough trips in rough rock, and a lot of wear and tear. In this case, one of our heavy duty Landjoff 28 litre extra tough tackle sack or 33 litre extra tough tackle sacks might be worth considering for their extra durability

In conclusion, choosing the correct size of rope bag for caving is a crucial step in ensuring your safety and comfort during your cave exploration. By considering the length of your rope, looking for a bag with adjustable straps, thinking about the type of caving you will be doing, and considering storage and accessibility, you can find the perfect rope bag that meets your needs. Remember, safety always comes first, so choose a rope bag that is sturdy, durable, and reliable. Happy caving!
