Answer: Trips in winter will be much more comfortable in 5mm. Thicker socks won't necessarily be less comfortable in warmer summer conditions though, so 4 or 5mm is a good thickness for year-round usage. You might want to think about thinner socks if you use canyoning boots for a better fit.
