While this lamp does include some protection circuitry, the safety measures built into protected cells are much more reliable and can avoid other battery race conditions. In addition, the lower height of unprotected cells might make them incompatible with the battery compartment in this lamp. For the sake of a few pounds, it's surely worth avoiding a nasty chemical fire on your forehead deep underground!
